THE ILLINOIS HUMANITIES COUNCIL ANNOUNCES 2002 GERMANY-ILLINOIS TEACHER SEMINAR

11 Illinois K-12 Teachers have been awarded full scholarships to attend a week-long seminar
in Speyer, Germany

WHAT: Through its established True Learning, True Teaching program for K-12 Illinois teachers and the success of two previous teacher exchange programs with Germany, the Illinois Humanities Council has launched a third effort to bring German and Illinois educators together. This summer, from August 9-17, 2002, 11 Illinois teachers will attend this yearís IHC sponsored seminar in Speyer, Germany with approximately 12 teachers from the German region known as Rhineland-Pfalz. This seminar will give the teachers the opportunity to explore the seminarís topic: "German Immigration to the United States." Although the True Learning, True Teaching seminars are dedicated to "learning for the sake of learning," all eleven educators will be eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Other sponsors for the seminar are The Aklantische Akademie Kaiserslautern-Pfalz, the Institute for Continuing Education for Teachers-Pfalz, and the Institute for Historical and Ethnic Studies-Pfalz.

WHO: Participants include eleven K-12 teachers from Illinois with three or more years of teaching experience who have participated in an IHC-sponsored program in the past.

WHEN: August 9 ó 17, 2002

WHERE: "German Immigration to the United States" is a weeklong seminar that will take place in Speyer, Germany.

BACKGROUND: Established in 1996, the IHCís True Learning, True Teaching program offers committed teachers an environment where they can concentrate on three Rís of their own: Reflection, Renewal, and Reinvigoration. These free, weeklong seminars allow teachers who are interested in learning for learningís sake to be stimulated intellectually and to be immersed in intellectual exploration with other Illinois teachers. The German exchange program grew out of the success of the Illinois Humanities Councilís True Learning, True Teaching program.
