Illinois K-12 Teachers and School Librarians Attend One-Day Seminar on World Literature

CHICAGO ó On Saturday, October 26th, The Illinois Humanities Council and The Center for Book Culture will host "A Day of World Literature," a seminar for 49 area K-12 teachers and librarians. Professor James Hurt of the University of Illinois, Urbana will lead the participants in a discussion of texts by three international authors published by the Center for Book Culture. Participants will read and discuss: Flann OíBrienís At-Swim-Two-Birds (Ireland), A Tomb for Boris Davidovich by Danilo Kis (Former Yugoslavia), and The Fear of Losing Eurydice by Julieta Campos (Cuba/Mexico).The day will conclude with a reading by and conversation with Bosnian novelist Aleksandar Hemon.

Modeled on the Illinois Humanities Councilís highly successful "True Learning, True Teaching" seminars for Illinois teachers, "A Day of World Reading" is designed to increase awareness and reading of texts by international authors. Alumni of the IHC teacher programs were asked to "bring a librarian" to the seminar. The seminar was full within a few days. As part of the program, participants will receive additional titles from the Center for Book Culture as a way of introducing educators to its publications.
