Illinois Humanities Council Seeks Nominations for Board of Directors

CHICAGO óThe Illinois Humanities Council is seeking nominations for its Board of Directors. The IHCís Nominating Committee will carefully review nominations and new members will be elected at the April meeting of the IHC Board of Directors meeting.The IHC Board of Directors is composed of academic members and independent scholars representing various humanities disciplines, and public members of various professions who have an overriding interest in the humanities. Its membership reflects the geographical and cultural diversity of the state. All Board members actively participate in the diverse activities of the IHC. In addition to attending three meetings per year, board members review grant proposals and make funding decisions; develop, promote and evaluate programs; work to increase public membership; make policy decisions; and raise funds for the organization.
"Board members are leaders in their fields and in their communities," said Kristina Valaitis, Executive Director of the IHC. "IHC Board members become ambassadors for the IHC and its mission. They promote greater public appreciation for the humanities wherever they can ó in the board room, the law office, the hospital, the bank, as well as the library or the community center."
Board members are elected, in accordance with the National Endowment for the Humanities guidelines and institutional needs, to a three-year term, once renewable. To nominate an individual to the IHC Board of Directors, send the candidateís name and resume along with a letter of recommendation to the following address by February 28, 2002.

The humanities are those disciplines concerned with the question: What does it mean to be human? These include the study of history, languages, literature, archaeology, jurisprudence, ethics, religion and the social sciences that employ qualitative approaches. Interdisciplinary areas such as folklore, women's studies and American studies are also considered aspects of the humanities.
