ILLINOIS HUMANITIES COUNCIL IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR GERMAN-AMERICAN TEACHER EXCHANGE 2002

CHICAGO ñ The Illinois Humanities Council is accepting applications for its German-American Teacher Exchange Seminar, "German Immigration to the United States," which will take place in Speyer, Germany, August 9-17, 2002. The Illinois Humanities Councilís international German exchange seminars are now in their third year. As part of this exchange, in July of 2002, a group of German teachers from the Hamburg area will attend the IHCís "True Learning, True Teaching" Seminars at Starved Rock State Park in Utica, Illinois.
This exchange is a part of the IHCís "True Learning, True Teaching" teacher seminars. Created six years ago by the Illinois Humanities Council, the "True Learning, True Teaching" program is designed to reward the stateís finest teachers with opportunities for further learning and intellectual renewal. Each seminar contains a humanities focus, is interdisciplinary in scope, and is led by a prominent humanist scholar from a local college or university.
In August, approximately 12 Illinois teachers and 12 teachers from the German region known as Rhineland-Pfalz will have the opportunity to explore this seminarís topic: "German Immigration to the United States." The United States has been a nation of immigrants from its very beginning. Germany long served as the source for one of the largest groups of those immigrants, and historians have judged them to have played a key role in shaping United States history. The German region of Rhineland-Pfalz played a particularly significant part in this story. So too the Midwestern United States. No region of the United States served as the adopted home for more German immigrants. Cities like Chicago and Milwaukee and the states of Illinois and Wisconsin absorbed huge numbers of Germans, including many from Rhineland-Pfalz.

: Speyer, Germany
ï This seminar will include readings, lectures, discussions, workshops, and site visits.
ï English will be the primary language of instruction, but knowledge of the German language can be useful.
ï The seminar is open to Illinois K-12 teachers who are currently teaching full time and have one or more years of full-time teaching experience.
ï Special preference will be given to teachers with German language skills and to IHC seminar alumni. However, other teachers are encouraged to apply.
ï Teachers selected to attend will travel as a group from Chicago to Speyer and back to Chicago. Participants pay for airfare and incidentals only.

This seminar is part of an exchange program between Rhineland-Pfalz and the Illinois Humanities Council. Sponsors include the Illinois Humanities Council, the Aklantische Akademie Kaiserslautern-Pfalz, the Institute for Continuing Education for Teachers-Pfalz, and the Institute for Historical and Ethnic Studies-Pfalz.
