ILLINOIS LIBRARIANS FACE "HORROR!"
12/12/2006
CHICAGO—The Illinois Humanities Council (IHC) currently is accepting applications for its free weekend renewal seminar for public librarians, "The Horror! The Horror!" March 16 – 18, 2007, at Starved Rock State Park, Utica. The IHC pays for room and board; attendees are asked to provide their own texts.
Application deadline is February 11, 2007. Further details and an application are available on the IHC website (www.prairie.org/Librarians)or by contacting Carole Cosimano (cjc@prairie.org) at 312-422-5580.
Horror fiction is considered one of the most powerful – and popular – of all literary genres, so powerful that some of the earliest motion pictures were adaptations of horror stories. Professor Parley Ann Boswell, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, is the seminar scholar and will lead discussions with participants. Seminar participants will explore the horror fiction of Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, Anne Rice, and Margaret Atwood. To supplement reading and discussion, the group will watch several horror cinema classics.
Beyond providing intellectual renewal, the seminars provide a retreat atmosphere in which educators from diverse academic backgrounds and disciplines can gain deeper insight into their profession. Tuition, lodging, and meals are provided by the IHC.
The Illinois Humanities Council is a nonprofit educational organization [501 (c) 3] dedicated to fostering a culture in which the humanities are a vital part of the lives of individuals and communities. The IHC is supported by state, federal, and private funds.
